Interview with a K-State Research and Extension Specialist
Well, it might not seem as exciting as "Interview with a Vampire" but ol Drac wasn't trying to integrate technology into programming. Or was he?...
So, back to the mission at hand, my very first podcast! I chose the Zoom platform to record, and used YouTube to upload.
It took a few takes, so I tried to seem natural and human (which I am) by being honest about the situation as we had tried a few times to get things right, but got a great interview in at the end!
Here, Mr. Jan Steen of K-State Research and Extension gives his experience on his work integrating technology for adult learners with the Kansas PRIDE Program. I did ask permission from him, which was granted. The reasoning? This is Extension, and this interview was about a program backed by applied research, which is our duty as public servants in Extension to deliver. Enjoy!

As always, you did such a great job Jaime!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very well made interview! The zoom platform worked very well - the transition in the video between your view and his was very smooth with little latency. His audio was extremely clear. I had some trouble uploading my podcast link (true podcast, no video) so I also appreciate that YouTube embeds onto the page - couldn't have been any easier to access.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of content - I appreciate that your interviewee made clear the evolution in technology, not just the current application. The examples of typing and re-typing to now digital submissions resonated. He also emphasized the importance of videos/webinars for virtual access - which this interview in part demonstrates. You're able to share a much more humanizing and personal interview (using video/audio via web) than you would if it were just a shared transcript.
Great job, as always!
Thank you Bo and KLM@KSU! I was extremely pleased with the way this one turned out (true to form it took about 4 tries and I am blessed that my interviewee is such a patient person!). When I watched it I really was impressed how zoom made the transition so smooth, it almost felt like some sort of live interview moment that you would watch on television.
ReplyDeleteMy interviewee is of course steeped in podcasts, but let me have my space. He allowed me to go through my problems and work them out, which I feel helped immensely. His audio equipment is off the charts fancy, and I appreciated him taking the time to set it up to use for my first timer podcast!
Thanks again for your kind words!
Hi!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your podcast video. Working in Extension I have heard a lot of great things about the PIRDE program. It was awesome hearing Jan share his experiences with technology. I could related to many of the things he talked about with videos and social media. In Extension at the local level, we also have worked to incorporate videos into our programing. We can host a workshop or informational meeting, but sometimes not many people will be able to come. Adults are busy, they often have full time jobs, and many other priorities. So recording a workshop or filming a short informational video allows them to learn at their leisure. They are able to watch the video at home, maybe after they have put the kids to bed. This flexibility allows them to reach us when it's most convenient for them. I'm glad that Jan brought up that point! We also understand that technology will never take the place of our meetings or face to face contacts. However, it's a great supplement and awesome way to reach a wider audience in a short amount of time.
I also liked how Jan mentioned he has seen some hesitation. There have been people that missed the print out newsletter or aren't happy about change happening quickly. We have seen this as well. It's impossible to make everyone happy. We have gone to a e-newsletter format in our district and a few of our board members weren't happy. We learned to compromise and have made the newsletter printable and available at our office for anyone who wants to pick up a hard copy. This way we are trying to meet everyones needs.
Thanks for sharing! Great job!
